Champagne and Sparkling Wine are not the same!
There is only one type of sparkling wine that is truly recognized as ‘Champagne’ and it is exclusively produced within the renowned Champagne region of France. Bubbling wine bearing that same name, yet bottled elsewhere is an imitation.
Champagne is the most famous sparkling wine in the world and is perfected by a particular technique only used in its region of origin. Other wineries labeling their assortment of sparkling wines as Champagne often do not even use techniques resembling those developed in France and therefore produce substandard, yet cheaper copy-cats.
Significant levels of carbon dioxide added to wine during the fermentation process will make the liquid fizzy, and will turn it into a product better known as ‘sparkling wine.’ Sparkling wine is usually white or rosé (pink), but there are also various types of red sparkling wine, such as the Italian Brachetto or the Australian Shiraz. The taste of a sparkling wine can vary from downright sweet to bone dry with a toasty, nutty or fruity flavor. Their texture can be nondescriptly grapey, or have delicate nuances of fruits, such as apples, pears, cherries, lemons, and berries.
As with all wines, the sweetness level in Champagne, as well as other sparkling wines, varies depending on the amount of residual sugar they contain. Most sparkling wine is non-vintage (NV), which means that winemakers blend older wines with new. They are ready to be consumed immediately and further aging does not improve their taste. Champagne or sparkling wine marked as vintage is pure and made from only one year’s harvest. Connoisseurs are convinced that these wines will grow more vivacious with time, but only up to ten years. After that there will be little or no improvement to the flavor.
Premium sparkling wines have tiny bubbles floating upward in a continuous stream from the bottom of the glass. If the bubbles are large and random, the wine is of inferior quality, and if there are hardly any bubbles you may have a bad bottle, a dirty glass or wine that is too old. In that case it would be better to chuck it.
